14/08/2008 - The Counterfeiters
In daily life, it is rare to meet characters who are truly impressive and inspiring. I've been fortunate enough to travel to Prague and meet Adolf Burger, the Jewish survivor of four concentration camps and a key figure in the Nazi plan to counterfeit the pound and dollar.
A typographer before the war, Burger was arrested and taken to Auschwitz. He was then recruited to work on Hitler's secret plan to cause the economic collapse of the Allies by forging currency. He is the sole surviving Czech forger of 'Operation Bernhard'.
I'm delighted to announce that next year Frontline will be publishing the memoir of Burger, titled 'The Devil's Workshop'. His memoir has already been published in German, Czech and Japanese, and was used as the basis for the Oscar-winning film The Counterfeiters.
If you've seen the film, please let me know what you thought of it, and what you thought of Adolf Burger.
Over the coming months, I'll describe the differences between the book and the film, and we'll be uploading a short video of Mr Burger in Prague.
We are also hoping that Mr Burger will visit London early next year for a series of events, including screenings of the film, a Q&A and a book launch.
